That excitement that emanated within as we flew over India on our way to this magnificent, serene island that is home to spectacular scenery and a culturally rich course known as Sri Lanka. But the one that really gave us the most joy was the idea to stay at some of the finest luxury hotels in Sri Lanka. This was going to be our first time visiting the island, and therefore we had to ensure that it was one of our best holidays.
Arrivals: A Warm Welcome
The moment we touched the Sri Lankan soil, warm tropical air swept gently over the island and welcomed us with all statutory effect. The drive from the airport to our hotel was appealingly introductory, having lush greenery everywhere, coconut palms bending themselves softly, and glimpses of deep blue sea here and there. Our destination was The Postcard Galle, one of the finest luxury hotels in Sri Lanka, on the southwestern coast. As we came up to the hotel, perched above the waters of this stunning blue lagoon, we knew we had made the right choice.
Stepping into paradise
The first steps into The Postcard Galle were like entering another world. This intimate setting of ten rooms exuded calm and luxury. We were mesmerized by the view from the lobby down to a panoramic view of the Indian Ocean merging with the Gin River, with waves mashing on the shore. Equally, if not more captivating, our room had high ceilings of Burmese teak, a well-crafted wooden bed, and sleek titanium floors reflecting the tropical modern aesthetic that is so uniquely luxury hotels in Sri Lanka. The private balcony that gave a ringside view of the ocean soon turned out to be our most favorite place.
Galle Exploration: History and Modernity
The next day, we went around seeing Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that lay very close to our hotel. Galle Fort, with its quaint cobblestone streets and equally well-preserved colonial architecture, stood enviable testimony to the rich history of this island. We strolled through the spice markets and designer boutiques and came away impressed by how well the old integrated with the new, much as we already had witnessed with the luxury hotels in Sri Lanka, such as The Postcard Galle. Packed with a myriad of cultures, the town simply overwhelmed our senses, and we never had enough of it.
A Brush with Nature's Majesty
One of the most unforgettable excursions was that of whale watching, which our hotel had arranged. We were informed that the waters off Sri Lanka host the most magnificent blue whales, and we longed to see them. The hotel people had made all the arrangements, and pretty soon, we found ourselves on a boat, into the deep blue sea. When we finally saw the whales, it was a really great sight to see: the enormity and the grace those animals had were so humbling; that was when we genuinely realized the connection with nature that luxury hotels in Sri Lanka offer.
Unwind in Paradise
Returning to The Postcard Galle after this adventure, we made up our minds to indulge in some well-deserved relaxation. The spa facilities here proved all one could have hoped for. We booked a couples massage, and the skilled therapists worked their magic, soothing every knot and tension. The soft scents of herbs and oils in the air combined with the soft murmur of the ocean waves make the experience nothing less than heavenly. Most of the luxury hotels in Sri Lanka, much like The Postcard Galle, know that wellness is important to the modern-day traveler. Attention to this detail reflected in each little aspect of our stay.
A Gourmet Voyage
Evenings at The Postcard Galle were reserved for their culinary voyages. The menu at this hotel celebrated all the diverse heritage of Sri Lanka—from Dutch-Ceylonese Lamprais and Portuguese Bolo di Amor to the spicy Tamil Jaffna Curry. From the outdoor patio to our private balcony overlooking the lagoon, each meal was a sensory delight. If there is one thing certain, it is that fine dining in any of the luxury hotels in Sri Lanka is an experience unto itself, and The Postcard Galle does little to change that. Each bite was testimony to the rich culinary traditions of this island.
As the time finally came to leave The Postcard Galle, we really did not want to leave. Our first trip to Sri Lanka had been more than everything we had ever dreamed of; the island's natural beauty, further complemented by its rich culture and warm hospitality we enjoyed at the luxury hotels in Sri Lanka, combined to make it a trip we will never forget. Thus, with all our belongings packed and ready to leave for home in India, it was pretty sure in the conscience of each one of us that the experiences we gained during our stay in Sri Lanka would remain etched in the hearts and minds of all of us forever. And we promised ourselves that we would be back in this paradise to once again feel first-hand the magic of luxury hotels in Sri Lanka.
